A woman from northern Israel was arrested Tuesday after she threw a rock and broke the windshield of a police car after being reprimanded by the officers for not wearing a face mask.
According to the police, the woman in her 20's was escorted by the police officers outside of a post office in the city of Acre on Monday after she refused to put on a mask. The woman was taken for further questioning and is due to appear at Acre's Magistrates Court later in the day for a remand hearing.
In the meantime, police reported that 5,072 fines were handed out since Monday for various violations of lockdown rules.
The majority of the fines, 2,958, were handed out to those caught leaving their homes for reasons not specified by the government; 1,714 fines were handed out for failure to wear a face mask; 82 for breaking quarantine; 198 for being at an out-of-bounds location and 76 fines were handed out to open businesses not allowed to operate under public health orders.
Police also reported difficulties in enforcing coronavirus rules for barbershops and beauty salons, with business owners arriving at people's personal homes in violation of restrictions.
"Out police work is focused on street businesses or shopping areas, but the real challenge is with business owners giving covert services at personal residences," a police source said.
"In this case, as with all other issues during the pandemic, there is no replacement for personal responsibility and adherence to orders from both business owners and citizens alike."
On Sunday, police fined a barbershop owner in Netanya and the three costumers who were inside the premises at the time. Later officers learned that one of the costumers was IDF Home Front Command Spokesperson Maj. Tamar Barsheshet.
The owner was fined NIS 5,000, with each customer receiving a penalty of NIS 500.
