A 27-year-old woman from Deir al-Asad who is seriously ill with coronavirus gave birth at a hospital in northern Israel — while sedated and on a ventilator.
Doctors at Ziv Medical Center performed a C-section on the woman, who was in her 32nd week of pregnancy.
The baby was born in good health and transferred to a PICU. The mother’s condition continues to be serious.
The baby’s father, who has also contracted the virus, is hospitalized and reported to be suffering mild symptoms.
Five coronavirus patients are hospitalized at Ziv Medical Center: one in mild condition, one in moderate condition and three in severe condition.
As of Sunday evening, there are 13,654 confirmed coronavirus cases in Israel, while 173 people have succumbed to the disease, health officials confirmed.
Of that number, 150 are in serious condition, including 114 patients in need of ventilator support, a rise of 4.6% since Sunday morning.
The Arab Israeli community of Deir al-Asad with a population of around 12,400, had as of Monday morning 99 confirmed cases — the second-highest infection rate in the country.
Along with its adjacent neighbor Bi'ina, became a “restricted area” on Saturday morning amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak in the area.
The two towns in northern Israel, which share a single municipality, will be locked down for seven days, starting on Saturday at 8 am.
Police set up roadblocks around the town and dozens of officers were deployed throughout the region.
