MK Itamar Ben Gvir of the ultranationalist Religious Zionist Party vowed to stay in the contentious East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah until Jewish residents are provided with adequate security.
Tensions have been running high in the Jerusalem flashpoint in recent days since Ben Gvir opened a makeshift parliamentary office there after Palestinians firebombed the home of a Jewish family.
"Look how much security there is at the moment, there is peace. This is what needs to be done even without Ben Gvir coming here," he said. "Unfortunately, in the State of Israel, things only run if you beat on the table."
He also slammed Public Security Minister Omer Barlev after negotiations over police protection for the neighborhood's Jewish residents fell through.
"Barlev is a bull in a china shop. He would negotiate with Hamas and Fatah, but not with Ben Gvir."
