Clashes broke out Tuesday night between protesters and police near the Israeli Embassy in Mexico City during a demonstration against Israeli attacks on Rafah in the Gaza Strip, according to AFP journalists at the scene.
Some protesters, who were masked, threw stones at a squad of police officers blocking their path to the diplomatic complex in the upscale Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood.
The demonstration, called "Urgent Action for Rafah" on social media, drew around 200 people. About 30 of them began breaking and removing metal barriers that blocked access to the embassy.
Riot police responded with tear gas and by throwing stones back at the protesters, an AFP team reported.
The protest was organized to condemn an Israeli airstrike on a displacement camp in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, which killed 45 people and injured 249 on Sunday, according to the Health Ministry of Hamas, the Islamist movement governing the Palestinian territory.
