Israel approves memorials for Jewish victims of antisemitic attacks worldwide

Joint committee of Israeli government and national institutions officially recognizes dozens of victims of antisemitic violence abroad since state's founding; public submissions for recognition invited, based on defined criteria for eligibility

A special committee, jointly led by the Israeli government and national institutions, has approved memorial recognition for dozens of Jewish individuals murdered in antisemitic attacks since Israel’s founding. The committee’s decision followed a professional review of violent incidents and their circumstances.
Chaired by Yaakov Hagoel, head of the World Zionist Organization, and Avi Cohen-Scali, director-general of the Diaspora Affairs Ministry, the committee is managed by Jewish Agency Secretary-General Josh Schwartz. Representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office, Diaspora and Foreign Ministries, the National Security Council, the Jewish Agency and the World Zionist Organization also participate.

The committee assesses violent events abroad to compile a list of victims eligible for recognition, based on criteria including:

  1. Attacks targeting individuals, events or sites identified with the Jewish community.
  2. Violence driven by antisemitic or anti-Zionist motives.
  3. Attacks linked to perpetrators with a history of antisemitism.
  4. Incidents classified as antisemitic by authorities in the affected countries.
Public submissions for recognition are invited. Proposals, no longer than two pages, should summarize the event, include the submitter’s name and affiliation and provide supporting documents. Submissions can be sent to: [email protected].
