Mumbai's small Jewish community is in mourning after two Jewish brothers, Alan and Israel Vasker, who played on India's cricket team for the Maccabiah Games in Israel, drowned in a river near Mumbai.

The two brothers, 23 and 25, were boating far out on a river in the Alibag area on Monday afternoon. One of them jumped in to swim but was swept away by the current. The second brother jumped in to rescue him and they both drowned.

Israel's Consul General in Mumbai Kobbi Shoshani said: "I met Alan and Israel during the preparations of the cricket team of the Jews of Mumbai before they left for the Maccabiah Games and I even got to join their practice. This is a huge loss for the family, the community and all of us. My heart is broken."
