An operative for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist group was killed by Israeli security forces overnight Thursday after he opened fire at them during a riot in the northern West Bank town of Burqin west of Jenin.
There were no casualties reported on the Israeli side. The assailant's weapon was seized.
The incident took place during a nightly raid on the Palestinian town as part of an ongoing Israeli effort to clamp down on a large Hamas terrorist network in the area.
The Palestinian was identified as 22-year-old Alaa Nasser Zayoud — a member of the al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the terrorist movement.
Earlier this week, two Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli forces in Burqin as Israeli forces carried out a spate of anti-Hamas operations across the West Bank. Three other Palestinians were killed and two IDF soldiers were seriously injured in one such raid.
IDF Chief of Military Staff Aviv Kochavi on Sunday said the raid on Hamas interests in the West Bank foiled planned terror attacks on major Israeli cities.
"The militants who were arrested in the operation could have carried out attacks on Jerusalem, Netanya, Tel Aviv or elsewhere," Kochavi said.
"This is a considerable achievement made possible thanks to the cooperation of the IDF with the Shin Bet and the police anti-terror unit. Such raids are conducted dozens of times each week and provide Israel with the security it requires on the West Bank and beyond."
Also on Thursday, A Palestinian woman was shot dead by police officers after she charged at them with a knife in the Old City in Jerusalem.
The suspect arrived at the scene coming out of the Temple Mount complex and approached Israeli police officers stationed next to the Old City's Chain Gate. She then pulled out a knife and attempted to stab them. The cops opened fire in response, killing her. No police officers were injured in the incident.
The woman was identified by Palestinian reports as Esra Khuzaymah, a 30-year-old resident of the West Bank town of Qabatiya near Jenin.
