U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that the Trump administration does not oppose Iran having a civilian nuclear program, so long as it does not include uranium enrichment.
Speaking on journalist Bari Weiss’s Honestly podcast, Rubio stressed that the U.S. seeks to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, preferably through negotiations rather than military means.
“If Iran wants a civil nuclear program, they can have one just like many other countries in the world have one. That is, they import enriched material,” Rubio said. “But if they insist on enriching, they’ll be the only country in the world that doesn’t have a weapons program, but does enrich — and I think that’s problematic.”
