An Iranian official close to the Revolutionary Guard told The New York Times that the material ignited in the explosion at the port of Bandar Abbas, in southern Iran, was sodium perchlorate, a key component in fuel used for missile production. The Iranian government said the explosion, which has so far killed at least 14 people and injured more than 750, was caused by negligence in the storage of chemicals.
