Biblical names among most popular for baby boys and girls in New York City

Six of the 10 most popular names for boys in the city were biblical names, with Noah in 2nd place and Esther breaking in to the top 10

Six of the 10 most popular names for boys in the city were biblical names, the New York City Health Department announced in a year-end statement on Tuesday, citing statistics for the year 2022, with the name Noah, in second place.

In third place for boys is Eitan, fifth is David, sixth is Jacob, eighth is Joseph, followed by Daniel. Alexander came in the tenth spot, bumping Benjamin off. For girls, Leah comes in fifth place, and Esther broke into the top 10, coming in seventh place.
The most popular name for boys was Liam for the seventh year in a row and for girls, Emma, for the sixth year in a row. In 2022, 388 Emmas and 739 Liams were born, according to New York City birth certificate records.
Outside the top 10 but with the most significant jump during the last decade: Muhammad (1594%), Moshe (1105%) and Abraham (1100%) for men; Chaya (1134%), and Miriam (1048%) for women.

The popularity of the boy's name Noah throughout the United States has jumped by more than 130,000 %t since 1990, which places it at the top of the list of trending names over the last 30 years, according to data from the American National Insurance Administration. The name Jacob is the most popular among members of Gen Z.
