Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened that Israel "will pay a price" for the assassination of a senior Revolutionary Guards commander in an attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week.
"Israel must be punished for attacking the Iranian consulate complex in Damascus," he said in a speech during Eid al-Fitr prayers.
"Israel made a mistake by attacking in Syria. Consulates are part of the sovereign territories of their countries, as if our land was attacked. Israel made a mistake and will pay for it."
A host of senior Iranian officials have threatened to respond to the attack attributed to Israel, in which Revolutionary Guards commander Muhammad Reza Zahedi was killed. (Lior Ben-Ari)
