A man wearing a sports jersey with the inscription "Anti Jew" in French was photographed this week riding the Paris metro, marking another antisemitic incident in the French capital.
The photo, taken on line 13 at the Saint-François-Xavier station on Monday at 5:15 p.m., was shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by Sandrine Sebbane, an editor at RCJ radio station.
"I was alerted due to a picture of a person wearing a shirt decorated with a vicious anti-Jewish inscription on the subway. We are currently conducting tests and identification of this person with RATP (Public Transport Association) teams, to lead to the required criminal proceedings," Pécresse said. "Antisemitism has no place in our country."
The Paris transport union also filed a police complaint, saying: "The RATP strongly condemns racism and antisemitism and is fully cooperating with police to help identify and apprehend those responsible."
The incident comes amid a sharp 400% rise in antisemitic incidents in France. In the first half of 2024 alone, 887 antisemitic incidents were recorded, nearly tripling the 304 reported during the same period in 2023.
Dr. Racheli Bartz-Rix, head of the World Zionist Organization's Department for Combating Antisemitism, expressed deep concern, calling for stronger education and legal action. "Antisemitism is a dangerous social phenomenon, and we urge French authorities to take significant steps to eradicate it while strengthening educational efforts to prevent the spread of hatred," she said.
