Syrian rebel leader Ahmad al-Sharaa—better known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani—told Reuters in a written statement on Wednesday that he would dissolve the security forces of the toppled regime of Bashar Assad.
He also said his group which now rules most of Syria was working with international organizations to secure possible sites where chemical weapons may be located.
The United States welcomed the comments, but would wait to see what actions are taken, the Pentagon said on Wednesday.
"We welcome this type of rhetoric but... actions have to meet words as well," Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh told reporters.
