Republican Party names Sen. John Thune as new Senate majority leader

The Republican Party on Wednesday announced South Dakota Senator John Thune as the new U.S. Senate majority leader, replacing Mitch McConnell, who served as the party’s longest-standing leader in Senate history.
Thune defeated Rick Scott, who was backed by President-elect Donald Trump, for the leadership role.
