Dialogue is the only way judicial reform row ends well

Opinion: The protest can, and maybe should, be escalated but without setting a clear goal of compromise, its chances of bearing fruit are slim

It is unclear what goal those protesters who besieged Sarah Netanyahu at that Tel Aviv hair salon were looking to achieve. Did they want to ask how much it is for highlights? Query why she didn't go home before they arrived there? Shine a spotlight on the much-maligned wife of the prime minister? Learning anything that would justify this fiasco? I doubt it.

  • The protest can and should be escalated, provided more peaceful protests do not achieve their desired goals. Blocking highways, for example, is par for the course in these sorts of protests.

But is questioning detainments and screaming "shame!" in the faces of officers for simply doing their jobs too?
Last weekend, an Israeli pilot addressed a letter to Air Force Commander Tomer Bar online decrying his silence on the detainment of one of his pilots at a protest, comparing it to deserting an Israeli captive in Syrian captivity. Oh what cruel fate awaits these brave heroes in the cold Israeli jail.
Equally embarrassing was the demonstration in front of Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter's home. The self-righteousness oozing from those who maligned him as a "coward" and a "traitor to the nation's values" is staggering. Did any of those protesters stop to think that maybe, just maybe, he's doing, God forbid, what he actually believes in?
Not to mention the scorn and disgust targeted at the brave two men trying to establish channels of dialogue — President Isaac Herzog and National Unity Party Chairman Benny Gantz, joined by former IDF chiefs Gadi Eizenkot and Gabi Ashkenazi.

All these individuals believe that the only solution to this quagmire Netanyahu's government put us in, is to converse.
Yes, it's a terrible government of racists and sponges. The protest would do little to persuade them. The protest must focus on convincing others, chief among them the prime minister. He must come to the realization that this can't go on without compromise.
There needs to be an agreement on the balance between the three branches of government and necessary amendments to the judicial system while resisting Haredim's brazen extortion and other messianic trends.
Slanders and bullying, negating the other's position without putting forward an alternative, without willingness to compromise, while losing all brakes and a sense of right and wrong, are a sure recipe for the collapse of the entire social structure that was established here through sweat and tears, and yes, blood too.
