A Border Police officer and an IDF captain were killed during intense clashes with Palestinian terrorists in the Shijaiyah neighborhood of Gaza City on Friday, authorities said Saturday.
Sgt. Neta Yitzhak Kahana, a fighter in the Border Police’s elite undercover unit (Yamas), and Capt. Ido Voloch fell during a fierce two-hour battle Friday afternoon. The police and Border Police confirmed Kahana’s death after notifying his family.
According to operational accounts, the incident began during a covert ambush by Yamas forces in an area dense with rubble and tunnel shafts. During the operation, a terrorist emerged from a tunnel, opened fire and struck Kahana before retreating underground. Kahana and another fighter returned fire and threw fragmentation grenades toward the attacker, who apparently escaped.
A rescue force dispatched to evacuate Kahana came under repeated anti-tank missile fire during the extraction. Though Kahana was rushed to medical personnel, he was pronounced dead during evacuation inside the Gaza Strip.
