Polio virus has been identified in a sewage sample collected in the Jerusalem area, and the Ministry of Health has reported that this finding, along with additional positive samples from around the city, indicates local transmission of the virus. However, no new cases of polio have been documented to date. Since the beginning of the year, two further environmental samples testing positive for polio virus have been detected in central Israel and in Jerusalem.
