Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has called on the governor of the Bank of Israel to invalidate specific series of 200-shekel banknotes in an effort to disrupt Hamas's financial operations.
In a letter sent to Bank of Israel Governor Prof. Amir Yaron, Sa’ar proposed a move he described as a blow to Hamas’s economic capabilities. The letter, titled “A Step to Undermine Hamas’s Economy – Cancellation of Certain 200-Shekel Note Series,” argues that such a measure would directly impact the group’s cash reserves in Gaza.
“To dismantle Hamas, we must also wage an all-out economic war,” Sa’ar wrote. “Large amounts of the cash held by Hamas are in these notes. This move would deliver a severe blow to its financial capabilities, hamper its recruitment of new operatives, and obstruct its rearmament efforts.”
