A young ultra-Orthodox man was attacked Wednesday overnight while walking along Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn by an African American man who slashed him across the face without any provocation.
According to the outlet Collive, the victim reported the attacker shouted hate speech toward him before slashing him with a sharp object. Passersby immediately came to the young man's aid, providing police with information about the assailant and a manhunt was launched to capture him.
The victim, a Crown Heights resident in his late 20s, was evacuated in serious but stable condition by United Hatzalah volunteers to a hospital. Yaacov Behrman, a well-known community activist in the Jewish community, wrote on social media platform X: “I can confirm that at approximately 9 a.m. this morning on Flatbush and Lafayette, a member of the Crown Jewish community was slashed in the face."
"I just spoke to the family; he is hospitalized and requires surgery. The attacker allegedly yelled hateful rhetoric. This is a very serious incident, and the Jewish Future Alliance is deeply concerned about it. Witnesses at the scene testified that it was unprovoked." he added.
Meanwhile, following another antisemitic incident over the weekend, Chicago police filed charges against the suspect accused of shooting at a Jewish man walking to synagogue. The charges, however, don't stipulate the incident as a hate crime.
The accused, 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, faces over 14 criminal charges, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder and seven counts of shooting at a police officer. Police said the suspect shot a 39-year-old man in the shoulder on Saturday morning.
Witnesses reported that the shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar” while shooting at the officers. Although this information hasn't been confirmed by authorities, in a published video, he can be heard shouting the chant seconds before firing.
