IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has decided to cancel his visit to the United States, scheduled for about a week and a half from now, due to the security situation in Israel, Ynet has learned. Zamir was expected to meet in the U.S. with the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and discuss cooperation between the militaries on the Iran issue and other threats. However, Zamir informed his hosts that 'in light of the security situation' and the heightened alert status of the IDF across all sectors, he believes it would be inappropriate to be absent from the country and manage events from afar. According to a senior IDF official, 'You can't put the military on high alert and fly abroad.' The chief of staff made the decision before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement about an 'attack ahead of the elections.'
