The National Democratic Assembly is suffering from "political persecution of the party and its leaders", the party's central committee said, following a special meeting in Nazareth Monday evening.
The party claimed that their opposition to last summer's war in Lebanon caused such persecution, adding that the Shin Bet monitors their political activities. "This will not shake the NDA from its beliefs, including those of a 'nation for all its citizens'," they said.
The meeting had been convened to to discuss this issue, as well as recent rumors that party chairman MK Azmi Bishara intended to resign from Knesset.
At the end of the meeting, the party issued a statement refuting recent media claims that Bishara intends to resign from Knesset and remain in Amman, Jordan, where he is currently holding meetings."Such statements were intended to confuse the public, and are derived from a desire to persecute MK Bishara politically," the party said. "Do not believe rumors in the media. If NDA has an announcement, it will issue a statement by itself."
Earlier, the 'Kol al- Arab' website reported that Bishara had was working out the details of the his
resignation, along with a close associate from Jordan.
Despite his party's denial of the rumor, Bishara's refusal to publicly refute the allegations himself means his political and personal future remains foggy.
