Rightists warned over plans to rebuild settlement

Security establishment says police charges will be filed against activists if they march toward former West Bank settlement of Homesh

Security officials threatened Wednesday to take action against right-wing activists if they pushed on with plans to march toward the former West Bank settlement of Homesh next week without authorization.

“We will file police charges (against the rightists),” a senior IDF officer told Ynet.

Over the past few weeks several right-wing groups have called on activists to march to Homesh next Tuesday with the aim of rebuilding it.

The security establishment said in response that entrance to the former settlement had been prohibited since the disengagement from Gaza and parts of the West Bank in the summer of 2005, and that the march would not be allowed.

The officer estimated that thousands of rightists would attempt to make their way to Homesh. So far three of the initiative’s organizers have been questioned under warning for suspicion of solicitation to commit a crime.

According to security sources, activists have already purchased hundreds of bricks they plan to use to rebuild the former settlement.

Officials said the setting up of numerous IDF and police checkpoints ahead of the planned march would hinder routine security activities in the West Bank.

“We will show zero tolerance in the face of the settlers’ violence,” a security official said.
