Mofaz: Barak's attack on Livni wrong

Top two Kadima leadership candidates display unity in response to Barak's attack on foreign minister

Unity in face of external threat? Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz defended his main Kadmia leadership rival Tzipi Livni Wednesday evening, slamming Defense Minister Ehud Barak for attacking the foreign minister earlier in the day.

"The attack on Tzipi's lacking abilities turned into a personal attack, and that's wrong," Mofaz said during a party meeting in Hadera.

Earlier Wednesday, Barak told Army Radio that "I'm not convinced that when it comes to important security issues…the foreign minister has what it takes to provide answers." The defense minister added that Kadima is a "refugee camp" mostly responsible for embarrassing affairs.

'No big deal'

Mofaz told the audience at hand that "Barak has the right to say who he likes and appreciates." He then addressed Livni: "In this contest we must maintain proper conduct in all matters pertaining to Kadima. When one faces attacks – and I've faced various kinds – one needs to maintain restraint."

Earlier in the evening, Livni herself put on a show of unity upon entering the venue and noticing that seats were arranged in a way that separated her camp from Mofaz's camp. The foreign minister immediately chose to sit right next to Mofaz.

While addressing Barak's attack, Livni said: "Forget about the attacks. It's not a big deal for me, no big deal for us, and no big deal for Kadima."
