Riots near Karta (Archive)

Members of the ultra-Orthodox community are once again protesting against the opening of the Karta parking lot in Jerusalem on the Sabbath, in what has become a Saturday routine.
Hundreds of haredim gathered near the lot and around the neighborhood of Meah Shearim, many of them children. Eight protestors have been arrested so far.
A group of around 200 also attempted to storm the lot, but police held them back. A few dozen lay or sat holding hands on the main road, blocking traffic. When officers attempted to clear them away they began to cry, "Shabbes" and "Nazis".
A number of officers on horseback are also present at the lot and just outside of Meah Shearim, where protestors have gathered to cry out against the parking lot's opening.
