Peres says Shalit video 'important, but isolated step'
Following reports of breakthrough in talks for release of captive Israeli solider, according to which Israel to receive video proving he is alive, President Shimon Peres says 'Path to Gilad Shalit's release is long, we do not want to create illusions'
President Shimon Peres commented on reports of abreakthrough in negotiations for the release of captive soldier Gilad Shalit on Wednesday, saying, "It's an important step, but an isolated one. The path to Gilad Shalit's release is still long and we do not want to create any illusions."
The president said this shortly after it was reported that Israel would received a videotape proving the soldier is alive and well this week. In exchange, the cabinet has agreed to release 20 female Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.
A statement by the Prime Minister's Office said, "The political-security cabinet has decided to approve the release of 20 female Palestinian security prisoners and detainees, in accordance with the suggestions of the negotiations team for Gilad Shalit's release."
Jerusalem sources said the German mediator had already viewed the video, and that Israel received information of its content, which apparently shows that the soldier is alive and well.
The video is believed to have been recorded in recent weeks.
Peres met with French Ambassador Christophe Bigot on Wednesday and the two discussed an array of issues. It should be noted that to captive soldier is also a French citizen, and that France has played a significant role in mediation efforts.
In response to the report of a breakthrough, Bigot said, "In addition to be an Israeli citizen, Gilad is a French patriot, and he is dear to our hearts, we will do everything in our power to secure his release. We have been, and continue to be in close contact with the German mediator, as well as with the Egyptians and the Israelis."
