Israel presents world's largest mixed grill

Top chefs gather in capital's Mahane Yehuda market to prepare Jerusalem mixed grill dish to enter Guinness Book of World records

Eighty kilograms of meat, 12kg of salads, 10kg of flour and over 1.5kg of spices. With the help of these ingredients the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem tried to break a Guinness world record on Monday, by preparing the largest Jerusalem mixed grill in the world, inside a giant pita with a diameter of three meters.

Early Monday morning Jerusalem's finest chefs from various restaurants in the capital met to start working on the special dish.

Jerusalem's famous Angel Bakery was tasked with baking the oversized pita.

But why rest at breaking just one world record? Alongside the world's largest mixed grill sandwich, the Jerusalem chefs also prepared the world's smallest dish: A Jerusalem mixed grill in a pita the size of a coin.

The market's merchants and passersby were invited to take part in preparing the meal, and once the record was broken they found themselves sharing the enormous meal.

And Monday's achievement is not the first time a Guinness world record was broken in the Jerusalem market – a few years ago, the world's largest plate of hummus was presented there. This record has since been broken by Lebanon.

The Jerusalem mixed grill was presented as part of the Hamshushalayim 2009 festivities, an annual cultural event held in the capital.
