Three weeks ago a video uploaded by a Facebook group in Syria showing school teachers abusing small children became the talk of the town in the Arab country. In the video, two female teachers are seen beating their students with sticks. The group that uploaded the video is called "Help us expose the identity of the two teachers who abused our children."
The video has been highly effective. Not only has it generated serious buzz, but has achieved the Facebook group's objective: The Syrian education ministry opened an investigation and located the two teachers. They work in a school in A-Safira in the district of Aleppo, northwest of Damascus.
In the video, the students are standing in a line and told to hold out the palms of their hands. Each one gets a lashing and then breaks out in tears. One of the students also gets hit on the soles of his feet while another student holds his feet up after being commanded to do so.

After vigorous questioning, the teachers admitted their actions. It turns out that the two were already investigated regarding a complaint filed against them in 2004. At the time their punishment was a 3% reduction in salary for three months. Now, when it has become clear they have reverted to these abusive methods, they were fired and are prohibited from ever working with children again. Syria's education ministry published a statement saying it is "determined to fight violence of this kind."
