Orna Berry
One of the world's largest network storage companies, EMC, has appointed an Israeli woman to be its new vice president.
Dr. Orna Berry, formerly the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Labor's chief scientist and chairwoman of the Israel Venture Association, will also run the company's center of excellence in Israel.
"It's part of EMC's strategic decision to expand its operations in Israel," Berry told Mammon Magazine. "The company has some very successful operations here due to a number of purchases it made. The management in Israel is very well-considered, as well as the communications with the company abroad."
EMC has research and development centers in Netanya, Herzliya, and Ramat Gan. But now the company plans to combine them into one "center of excellence", which will be located in Herzliya.
Berry, a 60-year old divorced mother of three, will head the center. She explained that the company also plans to accrue many new employees in order to expand its base.
EMC, which has other centers of excellence in India, China, Egypt, Russia, and Ireland, employs over 40,000 people worldwide.
As part of her job description, Berry will be responsible for contact with these centers, as well as with local academic institutions. She will also have the duty of investing in, and sometimes purchasing, local companies that deal in EMC's areas of interest. These include security, infrastructure management, computer operations, and network storage.
"EMC's operations in Israel are strategic and very ripe. It's an excellent company with continuing technological innovation very suitable for Israel," Berry explained.
