Poland wants Nazi camps to drop .pl on websites

Country fears it will get blamed for Nazi crimes as World War II becomes more distant

Poland's culture minister has appealed to museums at former Nazi German death camps in Poland to drop the .pl suffixes in their Internet addresses.

Bogdan Zdrojewski said he wants to fight a historically erroneous association between the death camps and Poland.

Poles fear that as World War II becomes more distant, they will get blamed for Nazi crimes because many of the former camps are located today on Polish soil.

During the war, the Germans ran them in countries that they occupied, including Poland.

Zdrojewski said Tuesday that Auschwitz, Majdanek and other state museums could replace the .pl suffix with .eu.

Poland is also waging a campaign worldwide to prevent foreign media outlets from referring to such places as "Polish death camps."
