Small victory for Israel

Op-ed: Goldstone retraction small victory but won’t help much in face of tightening global chokehold

The masses did not hit the streets Saturday upon the publication of the news that Richard Goldstone is retracting a significant part of the accusations he leveled at the State of Israel and IDF following Operation Cast Lead in Gaza.

For a long time now, the Goldstone report has been lying in some Israeli government drawer, gathering dust and growing mold. The words of regret uttered by its author can only elicit a two-word response from us: “Who cares.”

There was no great joy in the State of Israel, because Israelis, with their keen senses, feel that one report or another makes no difference. The diplomatic chokehold around Israel is tightening every day, and the processes taking place at this time have no connection whatsoever to Goldstone’s documents.

The Goldstone Report is at most another brick in the wall being built around us. In many respects, both the leaders and citizens of Israel feel frustration: The world wants a different Israel, yet Israel does not deliver the goods.

World faces other troubles

The world doesn’t quite care who’s right and who isn’t. The world has decided to put an end to Israel’s rule in the territories, this is what the world wants and this is what it thinks should happen. The world doesn’t care about one more or one less Goldstone.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will likely aim to leverage our small success story; we shall be hearing one statement and then another on behalf of Netanyahu, yet there is almost no chance that his words will enjoy any resonance. The world has its own troubles to worry about these days: The nuclear radiation spilling over from Japan, the mayhem in Libya, and the revolutions in other Middle Eastern states. Who is this Goldstone guy anyway?

For Israel, this is a small victory. After all, Jerusalem claimed from the first moment that the report twists the truth and prompts a blatant injustice. The fact that a Jew, and a Zionist at that, led a committee that put us against the wall angered even more people in Israel. We couldn’t even say that he’s an anti-Semite.

Officials in Israel again marked a large stamp of disapproval on Goldstone and his report, and headed out for a moment to breathe some fresh air. Meanwhile, the rockets of Gaza are already in the air too, homing in on their next targets.
