Mikhail Baryshnikov to perform in Israel

Soviet-American dancing legend to return to Jewish state in November, this time as actor in theater production 'In Paris'

A year after his previous visit, Soviet-American dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov will return to Israel in November, this time as an actor.

 

Baryshnikov will arrive as the lead performer in theater production "In Paris", staged by Dmitry Krymov. Other actors include Anna Sinyakina, Maxim Maminov and Maria Gulik, and the play is produced in association with Korjaamo Theater.

 

The play is based on a 1940 short story by Russian writer Ivan Bunin and centers on two Russian immigrants whose lives collide in 1930's Paris. He is a former general in the White Russian Army and she is a much younger beauty. Their love story is cut off when one of them dies, leaving the other one lonely and hopeless.

 

The production will be presented in Russian at the Suzanne Dellal Center for Dance and Theater in Tel Aviv, with a translation to Hebrew.

 

Baryshnikov, considered one of the greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century, has had an extensive acting career: His made his film debut in 1977 when he portrayed Yuri Kopeikine, a famous Russian womanizing ballet dancer, in "The Turning Point", for which he received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

 

In 1985, he co-starred with Gregory Hines and Isabella Rossellini in "White Nights". On television, he played Carrie Bradshaw's Russian boyfriend in the last season of "Sex and the City".

 

The play's director, Dmitry Krymov, who is known for his special aesthetic perception, has been awarded with premium of K.S. Stanislavsky, nomination “Novation”, “Crystal Thurandot” award as Best Director for the performance “Demon. View from Above”.
