Disappointing first day for Israelis at Olympics

Swimmers Nevo, Ganiel and Ivri fail to make semi-finals; judoka Arshansky loses second round of men's -60kg event

LONDON – The Israeli mission to the London Olympics had a disappointing first day Saturday, as none of the athletes competing were able to make it to any of the semi-finals.

 

Israeli judoka Tommy Arshansky lost to Japan's Hiroaki Hiraoka in the second round of the Olympic men's Judo under-60kg event, effectively ending his run in the Games.

It was a tough day in the pool, as well: Swimmer Gal Nevo came in the 10th place at the preliminary 400m individual medley heat, with a time of 4:14:77, failing to make it to the final round.

Swimmer Imri Ganiel finished the 100m breaststroke heat at the 24th place with a time of 1:02:07 minutes. Ganiel was, however, able to beat the Syrian and Lebanese swimmers in the same heat.

 

Swimmer Amit Ivri also failed to make it to the semi-finals in the 100m women's butterfly heat. Ivri was ranked 18th with a time of 57:78 seconds.
