Russia's national chess team is considered the strongest in the world, but that did not deter members of the Israeli women's team, who beat the Russian women in the European Team Chess Championship taking place in Warsaw, Poland.
Three games ended in a draw, and the dramatic and rare win was achieved by highly esteemed Israeli player Masha Klinova, who defeated Russian chess grandmaster Natalia Pogonina.

Israel's team is currently leading the tournament games, along with teams from Germany, Georgia, France and Ukraine.
The European Chess Union (ECU) congress is expected to convene next week. During the meeting, Israel will compete for the right to host the European Union Youth Chess Championship in Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, the 2013 FIDE World Chess Championship match between Indian world champion Viswanathan Anand and Norway's Magnus Carlsen is taking place in India. The first two games ended in a draw. The match's deputy arbiter is Almog Burstein of Israel.
