No contract having yet been signed, several major Israeli industry producers are in a bidding war. Duran Duran has expressed its willingness to perform, and the concert date is planned for June, though the location has yet to be determined.
The British group is undoubtedly one of the great pop bands of the 1980s, thanks to their huge hits, hairstyles, and Simon Le Bon, the lead singer of the band, a vocalist and spectacular music icon all by himself.
John Taylor and Nick Rhodes formed the band in Birmingham in 1978 with the name taken from the science fiction film, Barbarella. The first singer was Stephen Duffy, and Simon Coley was the bassist. Later, they were joined by Roger Taylor on drums and Simon Le Bon, who became the lead singer and so remains to this day.
Their debut, self-titled album was released in 1981. It contained a song that became a huge hit in the UK, "Girls on Film," and a song which became one of the band's favorites, "Planet Earth."
The album was tremendously successful, and Duran Duran did not tarry before releasing a second album, Rio, that blew the charts and turned Duran Duran into one of the world's hottest bands, getting headlines as "the second British invasion," comparing them with the Beatles.
Like most eighties bands, the band knew troubles, and Duran Duran nearly broke up in the nineties, though they shone again in another album that bore their name in 1993, better known as the Wedding Album.
The synthpop that was identified with the band has faded in popularity compared with new genres such as hip-hop, rap and of course the grunge bands of Seattle. However, Le Bon and the other band members remained friends and somehow stuck around, producing several acceptable albums in the past decade.
In recent years, Duran Duran has been in contact with Israeli producers and was supposed to come to the country in 2011, but the performance was never realized. Chances that this attempt will succeed are good.
