Turkey reportedly selects new ambassador to Israel

According to reports in the Turkish media, the new ambassador to Israel will be President Erdoğan's close advisor, Kemal Okem.

Turkish media reported on Friday that Kemal Okem, a close advisor to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been selected to be his country's new ambassador to Israel, though this was not officially confirmed by the government.

The appointment comes as part of the reconciliation deal signed between the two countries that reestablishes full diplomatic relations six years after the Mavi Marmara flotilla incident.

As part of that deal, Israel undertook to pay the families of the Turks killed in that incident compensation in the amount of $20 million. In exchange, Turkey agreed to prevent the filing of lawsuits against Israel entities, including the IDF, that were involved in the incident.
