Jerusalem entrance traffic arrangements to change starting Saturday night

For two weeks starting Saturday night, March 3, expansive infrastructure works will be carried out near the entrance to Jerusalem and Highway 1, as part of the 'Jerusalem Gateway' project; central routes will be blocked to traffic, while alternative lanes will open to facilitate the flow of traffic during the intervening period.

Starting Saturday night, March 3, and until Thursday, March 15, significant infrastructural works will be carried out near the entrance to Jerusalem, affecting traffic in the vicinity of the capital's main entrance route, Highway 1, and leading to many central traffic arteries being blocked.

Works will be carried out as part of the "Jerusalem Gateway" project, set to become one of Israel's biggest business quarters in the years to come.

As part of the works on the project, Shazar Boulevard will be cordoned off between the Nordau and Agrippas junctions from March 3 until March 8. Between March 10 and March 15, the junctions will be reopened but traffic may still be disrupted somewhat.

The public is asked to avoid arriving to the aforementioned areas during the time period and to use either alternate routes or public transportation.

In anticipation of the expected changes to traffic arrangement, parallel roads have been extended and unique routes allocated to facilitate the flow of traffic in the intervening period.

The alternate roads include Rabin Boulevard, HaNassi HaShishi Boulevard, Heichal HaMishpat Street and Herzl Boulevard. In addition, unique lanes were allocated to serve as replacement for the Shazar route's closure between Nordau and Agrippas until works complete.

The project's engineers said that blocking the capital's central roadway was essential to the works' progress, and that when they conclude the entrance to Jerusalem will be transformed to Israel's largest and most advanced transportation hub, alongside a lively business and cultural quarter expected to add 60,000 new jobs.

The exact outline chosen for the works, they added, was carefully selected while taking into accounts locals' needs and minimizing disturbance to their daily routines. In addition, in order to assist as much as possible both residents and people arriving and leaving, a Whatsapp hotline will be set up, in addition to the municipal hotline that will continue to provide service.

Some NIS 1.4 billion will be invested in the Jerusalem Gateway project, which will stretch some 300 dunam. The new quarter will include business, tourism, hospitality, leisure and cultural centers and will also include a transportation hub—including high-speed rail, two light rail lines, public and private transportation lanes, bicycle routes and verdant, expansive public areas.
