Palestinian caught smuggled into Jerusalem in trunk, behind stroller

Attempting to enter city illegally, a Hebron resident—aided by an Israeli Arab driver—hides behind stroller in car's trunk; man spotted and arrested, both him and driver taken in for questioning.

A resident of Hebron, who does not have a permit to enter Israel, hid behind a baby stroller tucked away in the trunk of a car in order to enter Jerusalem.

He was arrested by border guards who spotted him hiding, and was taken for questioning. In addition, the driver of the vehicle, a resident of the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Isawiya, was arrested. The vehicle itself was confiscated.

Commenting on the arrest, the Israel Police stated that they "operate both on the intelligence and operational levels in order to eliminate the entry of illegal aliens into Israel, Palestinians who are often involved in property offenses in Israel and sometimes even involved in terrorism."

Palestinians who wish to enter Israel and do not have an entry permit sometimes pay Israelis—some of whom are Israeli Arabs—to help them through the checkpoints.

Today in Israel there are tens of thousands of Palestinians who entered the state illegally.

Some who live in harsh conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip get involved in crime, mainly in property crime, as a way to earn a better living—smuggling the stolen property over to Palestinian territories where they can sell them to a fence for profit.

This system is well known to the police, which try by all means to prevent it.
