More than 65 targets were hit by Israeli aerial reprisal attacks that began Tuesday afternoon and continued into the night. The day’s strikes were launched on what security officials in Gaza called Islamic Jihad militant training sites.
Smoke was seen rising near the town of Deir al-Balah in the coastal strip and the Israeli military said the explosions there were related to its activity. No injuries were reported.
Other targets during Israel’s day retaliatory bombings included military equipment sites and security infrastructures run by Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror organizations.
The Israel Air Force, however, refrained from hitting headquarters of the terrorist organizations.
Despite the ceasefire announced by Hamas, the Israel Security Cabinet convened in the evening at the IDF's Kirya headquarters in Tel Aviv to discuss the situation.
According Eyal Zamir Southern Command chief Major-General Eyal Zamir, said the IDF obliterated important strategic targets in the Gaza Strip and porised the rapid strikes as a significant accomplishment.
“We attacked very valuable, very important targets and we have waited a long time for the opportunity to hit them,” he said in an interview with Ynet. “I think that at this point in time we have made a very big achievement.”
