The female suspect, believed to be in her 30s, has been "neutralized," according to the police, and her condition is described as critical. There were no reported casualties among Israeli forces.
The police said in a statement that the woman "drew a knife with the aim of carrying out a stabbing attack" before being shot by one of the officers.
A preliminary investigation into the incident revealed the attack was pre-planned and the woman managed to make it through several checkpoints before reaching the world's most ancient Jewish site.
On Monday, a Palestinian attempted to stab Border Police officers stationed at Herod's Gate - a gate in the northern walls of the Old City of Jerusalem - before being shot by Israeli forces. No Israeli troops were reported hurt, while the perpetrator had been moderately wounded.
