Aston Martin is considering developing a rugged SUV to compete with the highly successful Mercedes G-Class, now in its fifth decade. This news comes from British publication Autocar. The future vehicle, currently codenamed 'Project Rambo' at the company’s headquarters in Gaydon, hints at the Lamborghini LM002 from the mid-1980s, known as the "Rambo Lambo."
A company source indicated that developing such a model would only be feasible if there are at least 2,500 potential buyers. Therefore, it will likely not be built on a unique platform but on the existing DBX platform, with necessary modifications to the suspension system to handle tough off-road conditions. It might also feature a transfer case with a low-range gearbox.
Like other Aston Martin models, the future SUV will utilize Mercedes AMG engines, as Mercedes owns a 20% stake in the British manufacturer. This time, it might receive the plug-in hybrid version, combining a twin-turbo V8 with electric power.
Our take: Surprisingly, true off-road vehicles have seen a surge in demand across various categories in recent years, from the Suzuki Jimny to the Mercedes G-Class. Aston Martin wants to join this trend, making their plans logical. The only question is how the brand will maintain its unique character in a category traditionally disconnected from its sports car heritage.
