For the first time since its inception nearly a decade ago, the robotics team from Ofakim clinched victory at the national FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition). This season, team's inaugural robot was crafted in tribute to cherished individuals who lost their lives in the Gaza war: program graduate Sergeant Yonatan Maimon, 20, from the Nahal Brigade, who fell in Gaza; the father of one of the participants, Command Sgt. Major Denis Blenki,47, who fell in the battle for Sderot; and Ariel Bilia, 28, who bravely confronted terrorists, saving 10 family members, including two current team members.
"The team was my rock, my support system," shared Polina Blenki, 14, a team member and daughter of the late Denis. "I believe the best way to honor those we've lost is to live fully, to find joy and growth. My dad had this incredible ability to light up any room."
Guided by the dedicated mentors from FIRST ISRAEL, a leading STEM education nonprofit, the Ofakim students demonstrated remarkable resilience and innovation. "We pulled this off with our tight-knit crew," said Afek Asaf, 17, a proud team member.
While this specific off-season event is considered unofficial, they are hopeful they will be able to be just as successful during the March competition, where success could propel them to a worldwide event.
"This team represents Ofakim's future," said Ruti Na'amani, manager of the local sciences center. "Amid disaster, they have proven to be a beacon of light and a sign of strength for youth in Ofakim."
