U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris surprised viewers on Saturday by appearing on the popular satire show Saturday Night Live (SNL), where she poked fun at her rival, Republican candidate Donald Trump.
In the opening sketch, Harris portrayed herself opposite her own caricature, played by comedian Maya Rudolph. When she stepped onto the stage, the audience's applause was so loud that her first words went unheard.
"It is nice to see you, Kamala," the two greeted each other after the crowd quieted down and paused their laughter. “I’m just here to remind you: you got this because you can do something your opponent cannot do. You can open doors."
Harris' comment referenced an event in Wisconsin, where Trump struggled to open the door of a garbage truck, responding to U.S. President Joe Biden's slip of the tongue when he called Trump supporters "garbage."
Later in the sketch, which included a broader commentary on the approaching election campaign and impersonations of Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Kaitlan Collins from CNN, Harris and Rudolph encouraged supporters to "keep Kamala and move forward," and to go out and vote.
Harris's visit to the show's studio in New York marked a surprising stop during the final days of her election campaign, having previously made an appearance in Charlotte, North Carolina and was on her way to Detroit.
Rudolph first portrayed Harris on the show in 2019 and reprised her role this season. Rudolph's performance received critical acclaim, including praise from Harris herself. "Maya Rudolph I mean, she's so good," Harris said last month on The View. "She had the whole thing, the suit, the jewelry, everything!”
Politicians have a long history of guest appearances on SNL, including Trump, who hosted the show in 2015, but an appearance so close to election day is considered quite unusual.
