After the announcement was postponed following the fires in Los Angeles, the final list of nominees for the 2025 Oscars was announced on Thursday. The nominations are led by "Emilia Perez," France's submission for the competition and the winner of the Golden Globe earlier this month. "Emilia Perez" is nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best International Feature, and more.
"The Brutalist," Brady Corbet's film, and the great musical "Wicked," came in second and third with 10 nominations; "A Complete Uknown" starring Timothée Chalamet received eight nominations, including for his performance. "Anora" received six nominations, "The Substance" received five nominations, with Golden Globe winner Demi Moore being nominated for a first Oscar at age 62.
"No Other Land" by Palestinians Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal, and their Israeli partners Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, is nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category. The film, which has caused a stir in Israel in recent months, deals with the struggle for survival of the residents of the Masafer Yatta village group in the southern Hebron Hills in the West Bank.
The film premiered at the last Berlin International Film Festival, or Berlinale, and attracted great sympathy around the world.
"I know that this is a very difficult time to release a film, but it is important to me that the Israeli public sees it," said Yuval Abraham, one of its directors. "The film deals with issues that we are not used to seeing in the mainstream media: impossible friendships, the military occupation in the territories, and also the joint struggle of young Israelis and Palestinians for an equal future. While the arsonists in the West Bank are trying with all their might to prevent a cease-fire and the release of hostages, we invite the public to watch a film that touches on our very existence, and offers another way forward toward reconciliation and a political solution."
Coming up against "No Other Land" are "Black Box Diaries," a documentary by Shiori Ito, a journalist who returns to her rape case; "Porcelain War," which documents martial artists in Ukraine; "Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat," which deals with the attempted political intervention by Americans in Congo in the 1960s by promoting jazz music in the country; and "Sugarcane," about the exploitation of indigenous people and children for work in the fields.

Two noteworthy nominee absences are Denzel Washington ("Gladiator 2") and Nicole Kidman ("Babygirl"), who remained off the list. The absence of Daniel Craig ("Queer") and Pamela Anderson ("The Last Showgirl"), who actually received a Golden Globe nomination, is also surprising. Finally, "Challengers," Luca Guadagnino's successful romantic drama starring Zendaya, was left out without any nominations.
