ALS-stricken Israeli journalist returns to the screen powered by AI

After year-long absence due to ALS impairing his speech, Moshe Nussbaum returns to Channel 12 News using AI technology and virtual avatar; 'Being back in the studio after so long feels strange but deeply emotional'

Veteran journalist Moshe Nussbaum, who has been absent from Channel 12 News over the past year due to speech impairment caused by his ALS diagnosis, will return to the airwaves using AI technology and a computer-generated avatar, the network announced on Sunday.
"I'm in the studio for the first time in over a year. It feels a bit strange and, above all, deeply emotional," he said. Nussbaum himself will be writing the reports that will be delivered via the avatar during broadcasts.

"It will take a few more weeks before this happens," Nussbaum told Ynet. "I don't want to jump the gun, so I'm not rushing to get excited."
During an event held over the weekend, Channel 12 News presented Nussbaum's AI-generated avatar. "Here we are, just like before," said Nussbaum's digital avatar in a demonstration video released on the network's social media channels. "I'm sitting here in the studio for the first time in over a year. It feels a bit strange and, above all, deeply emotional."
