The Screen Actors Guild Awards took place early Monday in Los Angeles, offering celebrities a dress rehearsal for next week's Oscars, and sparking fresh scrutiny over their appearances—particularly their noticeable weight loss and the role of diet drugs such as Ozempic.
Online commentary again revolved around a familiar question: How thin have Hollywood stars become? Today, weight loss prompts immediate speculation about the diabetes drug Ozempic, long before anyone asks about diet or exercise routines.

Demi Moore, Brooke Shields, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Kathy Bates were among those drawing intense online scrutiny. “Even the already thin stars are getting thinner,” one commenter wrote, receiving widespread support online.
Gomez, newly engaged and a frequent target of online critics, became the focal point as social media users compared her current appearance to last year’s event, highlighting noticeable weight loss. Some commenters were supportive—“She looks amazing; she’s reaching her full potential!” one admirer said. Others, however, were more skeptical: “Did she start using Ozempic too?”

Gomez has frequently addressed public speculation regarding her weight. After criticism last year, she responded in an Instagram Live session, stating, “I’m a bit bigger right now because I enjoyed the holidays too much.” She has openly attributed weight fluctuations to medications prescribed following her kidney transplant and struggles with lupus.
Yet Gomez admitted the criticism is difficult: “I pretended not to care what people said, but afterward I’d cry endlessly because no one deserves to hear those things.”
Grande has also faced persistent speculation over her slim appearance, though those close to her attribute her weight loss to a punishing work schedule rather than medication or dieting. “Her body barely knows when it needs food,” said one source close to Grande. “Her schedule is relentless. She has superhuman strength.” Another source added, “She’s constantly scrutinized. She has to think carefully about everything she says. It takes a toll.”
Medical experts weighed in on speculation surrounding stars’ use of Ozempic. Plastic surgeon Dr. Dennis Schimpf told the Daily Mail that rapid weight loss from medications often leaves a telltale sign: “People using these drugs often appear to have heads too big for their bodies.”
However, experts were cautious about attributing Gomez’s appearance to medication use, given her medical history. “She’s slim, not gaunt,” said Dr. Dennis Schimpf. “Considering her health issues, I’d be surprised if she’s using it.”
Kathy Bates publicly acknowledged her use of Ozempic, clarifying it only helped her shed the final pounds of a nearly 100-pound weight loss journey that spanned seven years. “Many think I succeeded because of Ozempic, but they'd be impressed to know it was hard work and lifestyle changes,” Bates said.
