For the topping:
  • 1 beaten egg
  • Sesame seeds, nigella seeds, or coarse salt
Instructions:
  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 4 minutes until softened. Add the ground beef and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring to break up the meat into small pieces. Add the spices and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
  2. Drain any excess liquid from the skillet, then stir in the pine nuts or chopped almonds.
  3. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry slightly. Cut the pastry into 10 cm (4-inch) wide strips.
  5. Place a line of the beef filling close to one of the long edges of a pastry strip. Roll the pastry into a log, then shape it into a spiral. Repeat with the remaining pastry strips and filling.
  6. Place the spirals on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds, nigella seeds, or coarse salt.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown. Serve warm.
