Ingredients (serves 4):
- 1 package puff pastry, thawed according to package instructions
- 4 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1.5 pounds ground beef
- 1 teaspoon baharat spice mix
- 1/2 tablespoon sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup pine nuts or chopped almonds
For the topping:
- 1 beaten egg
- Sesame seeds, nigella seeds, or coarse salt
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a skillet. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 4 minutes until softened. Add the ground beef and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring to break up the meat into small pieces. Add the spices and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
- Drain any excess liquid from the skillet, then stir in the pine nuts or chopped almonds.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry slightly. Cut the pastry into 10 cm (4-inch) wide strips.
- Place a line of the beef filling close to one of the long edges of a pastry strip. Roll the pastry into a log, then shape it into a spiral. Repeat with the remaining pastry strips and filling.
- Place the spirals on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds, nigella seeds, or coarse salt.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown. Serve warm.
