Author David Grossman wins prestigious German cultural award

Israeli writer David Grossman has won a prestigious literary prize, awarded by the municipality of Dusseldorf, Germany. The prize, named after German-Jewish poet and philosopher Heinrich Heine, includes a cash prize of 50 thousand euros.
The mayor of Dusseldorf, Stephan Keller, in a statement on the city's website, called Grossman "one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Israeli literature, who has demonstrated a dedication to comprehension and harmony, far beyond the Middle East peace process. The jury that selected Grossman complimented his prose for "profound insight and empathetic connection with people grappling with seemingly unsolvable disputes. In his public addresses and essays, he continually advocates for peace and reconciliation in the Middle East. He never ceases to give humanity a voice."
Grossman is expected to receive the award - one of the most prestigious that Germany offers in the field of culture - which has been awarded for the 23rd time this coming December, on the eve of Heine's 227th birthday. Among the past winners of the award is the late Israeli writer Amos Oz, who won it in 2008.
