Israeli medalists in the 2024 Paris Olympics were kept out of an event where other winners celebrated their wins in front of fans. As part of the French Olympic committee's wish to make the games more accessible, they opened a "medal park" in front of the Eiffel Tower so spectators could see the medalists show off their winnings. But although the event is repeated every evening the six Israeli athletes who received their medals, have not been allowed to attend.
The main reason given was concern for the Israeli delegation's safety after receiving multiple death threats. The six medalists: Inbar Lanir, Peter Palchik, Raz Hershko, Sharon Kantor, Tom Reuveny and Artem Dolgopyat would very much like to be a part of the amazing and unique experience, especially Reuveny, the Olympic men wind surfing champion. Reuveny and Kantor will arrive at the Olympic Village on Sunday after competing in Marseille and hoped to take part in the event.
"This could have been an experience of a lifetime. We understand the security requirements, but it shows how Israel is not part of the normal world today," one of the athletes said.
Although the 2024 Olympic Games website boasts an openness to athletes and fans from all over the world, Israelis still feel they are not part of the celebration.
