Israel's Nations League opener to be held behind closed doors amid security concerns

National soccer team set to face Belgium in fifth round of group stage; French authorities considering possibility of holding match behind closed doors as well due to security challenges

Israel's UEFA Nations League campaign is set to kick off next week with an away match against Belgium, which will be held in Debrecen, Hungary, without spectators due to the ongoing war and concerns over potential protests.
Following Belgium's decision, the French national team is reportedly considering similar measures. According to a report by French newspaper L'Équipe, French authorities are contemplating holding their home match against Israel on November 14 at the Stade de France without fans.

The French Football Federation initially considered moving the game to a smaller city, but contractual obligations require it to take place at the Parisian stadium. The idea of playing behind closed doors is gaining support among French Federation officials as a way to "minimize risks," although no final decision has been made.
The report also notes that with reinforced security measures, including additional personnel and a screening barrier, the match could proceed without incident. Supporters of allowing fans to attend point to the peaceful participation of Israel's Olympic team in the Paris 2024 Games as evidence that the match could be safely held with spectators.
