The Beit Yeshurun Congregation in Houston has opened its doors to a poignant and moving experience that bridges art, emotion and solidarity.
The Shalva Art Exhibit, curated to express the profound realities of war, has taken center stage, offering visitors an evocative window into the resilience and hardships faced by Israelis since the events of October 7, 2023.
After its success in countries such as Korea, Hong Kong, Sweden, Israel and England, this marks the exhibit's first showing in the United States.
In the weeks following the war, Shalva’s art therapy team worked closely with participants in its art program, composed of teenagers and adults with disabilities, to help them process and express their feelings in response to the traumatic events.
This program not only included regular Shalva participants but also welcomed individuals with disabilities from evacuated communities. Together, they created works that poignantly highlight the ways in which people with disabilities experience the profound impact of war, capturing a narrative that resonates across all sectors of Israeli society.
“Art is a language that speaks beyond words," shared Rabbi Kalman Samuels, president and founder of Shalva. "Through this exhibit, we share not only the stories of pain but also the stories of strength, unity and hope that bind us together as human beings. We hope the people of Houston will feel this connection and understand the reality of life in Israel during these challenging times.”
Rabbi Brian Strauss echoed this sense of connection, emphasizing the significance of the exhibit for the local community: “Through this art exhibit, members of all ages have come to learn more about the incredible work of Shalva. We now hold a unique perspective on the trauma endured by all sectors of Israeli society since Oct. 7, 2023. It is a profound honor to share this experience with the entire Houston community throughout November.”
The Congregation Beth Yeshurun, a historic and vibrant pillar of the Houston Jewish community, stands as the largest conservative synagogue in Texas. Established with a deep commitment to education, faith and community engagement, it has long been a place where Jewish values and culture are celebrated and fostered.
The inclusion committee, under the guidance of Richard Kammerman and Judy Blake, has embraced the Shalva Art Exhibit as an opportunity to deepen the congregation’s understanding and enhance their approach to inclusive practices. As they reflect on their experiences, they have found renewed inspiration in what more they can achieve for all members of their community.
The arrival of the Shalva Art Exhibit comes at a time when the need for awareness and empathy is paramount. By bringing this exhibit to Houston, Beit Yeshurun is not just sharing art—it is sharing the stories that matter.
It serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of global awareness, ensuring that those in Houston not only stay informed but also feel connected to the lives of people in Israel. This initiative underscores the powerful message that community, resilience, and hope are universal, transcending borders and bringing people together in shared understanding and support.
